Did you know your computer monitor contains over 10 times more lead than a car? With the average life of a computer only 3 years or less, the environmental effect of IT waste in landfill has become a serious issue.
The EU has responded by creating the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive 2003) in order to minimise electronic waste going to landfill.
As a consequence, dumping redundant IT equipment in landfill is no longer acceptable, with CRT monitors being considered hazardous waste.
The Department of Trade and Industry and organisations relating to WEEE reuse and recycling are now enforcing the provisions of this legislation.
As a Registered Professional Broker and Waste Transporter/Carrier and Dealer of Controlled Waste we are authorised to collect and transport e-waste.
We are also Registered with the Environment Agency in the Register of Exemptions from Waste Management Licensing in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 (as amended) & Controlled Waste Regulations 1991 under paragraphs 40 and 41. This means we are authorised to store, refurbish and recycle I.T. equipment.
We are a Community Microsoft Registered Refurbisher and primary signatory to the UK Circuit Rider Principles so you know we are an ethical solution.
If you are providing us with reasonably modern computer equipment in repairable condition with no obvious hazardous waste items, then they would be considered second-hand goods and as such not be classed as waste. As such, there would be no requirement for you to register your premises or use consignment notes.
In addition, all premises that produce hazardous waste are now exempt from registration if they produce o more than 500kg of hazardous waste in a year.
DOT-COMmunications' will provide a certificate of waste disposal to donors of equipment suitable for refurbishment.
These certificates indemnify you against any possible costs relating to the disposal of IT equipment and confirm that the items were donated to a registered charity (DOT-COMmunICaTions is a registered working name of Charity No. 515918), and therefore may be tax-deductable. Certification is also necessary for any Environmental Audit your organisation might undertake.
DOT-COMm's reuse and recycling processes are in full accordance with the following legislation:
- Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989
- The Controlled Waste Regulations 1991
- European Union WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive 2003
- ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2006
Please note there may be a charge if you require us to provide a disposal certificate for lower specification computers.
If you as a business are a waste producer with more than 500kg of hazardous e-waste you want to have removed from your site, you will need need to be registered with the Environment Agency as a Waste Producer and an Environment Agency-approved Consignment Note will be required to move that waste.
We can supply and help you to complete the three-part Consignment Notes. The price for providing this documentation is included in our standard fees.
If you would like to know more about using Consignment Notes, please download the following file from the Environment Agency (457kb, PDF Format).
