Portable Appliance Testing

Our P.A.T. training courses are held Quarterly and are designed to teach competency in undertaking Portable Appliance Testing in an office or work environment.

Cost £100 per person (50% discount for not-for-profit organisations and people on low-income) for a One Day Course, including a full set of notes and certificate of competency on successful completion of the inclusive exam.

Tutor Details 

Senior tutor:

Apprentice trained Electrical Engineer
City and Guilds qualified
Electrical principles
Electrical Utilisation
Electrical Installation
BSc degree in Communications Engineering  

Assistant Tutor:

City and Guilds qualified
Attended and passed 2 different PAT training courses with an average pass mark of 90%
Minimum of 3 years practical experience of testing portable electrical appliances

The course covers –

Basic Electrical Theory
Voltage
Current
Resistance
Power
DC circuits
AC generation
PAT testing
What is PAT testing
What is a portable appliance
Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommendations
Performing the test
Visual inspection
Equipment Classes
Earth continuity
Polarity
Insulation resistance
Functional test
Post test requirements
Inspection and test performed by sticker
Validity of test
Failed equipment marked and taken out of service
PAT test log updated
Practical Test
Use of minimum of 2 types of PAT tester
Class 1 and Class 2 testing
Visual inspection

Examination

Typical examination will cover a practical section and a test paper covering all aspects of the syllabus theory and and will also include a minimum of 1 question on electrical health and safety.

16 questions
75% correct answers for a pass
85% or higher for Merit
Failure of practical test will result in an overall fail irrespective of examination result 
All examination papers will be kept for 24 months.

Quality Control

All training material and instructor led training will be subject to audit by the senor tutor. The senior tutor will be responsible for updating and issuing of training materials.
