Computer Recycling
& Refurbishment

Did you know: That the UK produces an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment every year, over 95% of which traditionally ends up in landfill. This figure is growing by an average of 8% per YEAR. Every year millions of fully-functional computers throughout the world are thrown away.

However, from the 1st of July 2007 it became illegal in the UK to dump electrical and electronic equipment into landfill.

Don't contibute to landfill, recycle them instead

IT Waste Disposal for Businesses, Organisations, Schools and Individuals

Its one of our goals to ensure that as much redundant IT equipment as possible in Calderdale is either reused or recycled, preventing toxic metals from entering the waste stream. We prioritise local, sustainable approaches to reuse and recycling. Wherever possible, working refubished equipment is redistributed at cost to local charities and we ensure that any materials which can not be reused are recycled for their metals, with hazardous components being safely broken down in full accordance with environmental legislation (WEEE and ROHS).

Due to the rapid evolution of IT equipment, many organisations have redundant equipment they wish to dispose of. DOT-COMmunications accepts computers donated by local authorities, businesses and individuals who would prefer to see them reused in the community rather than disposed of into landfill sites.

We aim to reuse this IT equipment to serve the needs of local charities, reusing approximately 80% of donated equipment we receive and we ensure that working in partnership that all of the equipment donated is properly recycled. We carry out as standard a data wipe of all the hard disks in our refurbished computers.

We can only refurbish computers for reuse if they are in a reasonable condition and fulfil our minimum specifications (fully functional Pentium 3 PC 1ghz etc). If we are unable to REFURBISH your old computer, then we have to RECYCLE it as Electronic Waste.

We welcome the donation of newer computers and IT equipment so please contact us if you have unwanted equipment of the following specification (Pentium 3 1ghz processor, Pentium 4 and above , 17"+ CRT or any working LCD monitors etc.) which can be made available at cost to local charities.

We also continue to accept older IT equipment in accordance with current environmental legislation, however we now have to charge for this service. Please contact us on tel: 01422-845003 for a removal price.

Recycling IT Equipment

We can recycle IT equipment which is no longer useful, however to do this, we have to break your old computer down into its Plastic, Metal, and Glass component parts to be properly recycled. This costs us the same costs as commercial organisations, sometimes more, which means we must pass the cost to you for providing this service.

All such equipment is processed in accordance with current environmental legislation. After your equipment has gone through our testing process we decide whether that item should be sold, recycled or environmentally scrapped. We have adopted the best possible practices in the Environmental disposal of unsaleable IT equipment.

For older IT equipment, we can arrange to recycle in accordance with current environmental legislation. Thre is a charge for this service.

Please note that DOT-COMmunications is unable to accept IT equipment donations at our premises WITHOUT prior arrangement.

Environmental and Legislative Information

Dumped Computers

Did you know your computer monitor contains over 10 times more lead than a car? With the average life of a computer only 3 years or less, the environmental effect of IT waste in landfill has become a serious issue. The EU has responded by creating the Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive 2003) in order to minimise electronic waste going to landfill. As a consequence, dumping redundant IT equipment in landfill is no longer acceptable, with CRT monitors being considered hazardous waste. The Department of Trade and Industry and organisations relating to WEEE reuse and recycling are now enforcing the provisions of this legislation.

DOT-COMmunications provides certificates of waste disposal to donors of equipment suitable for refurbishment. These certificates specify that donors are indemnified against any possible costs relating to the disposal of their IT equipment and that DOT-COMm's reuse and recycling processes are in accordance with the following legislation:

•  Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989

•  The Controlled Waste Regulations 1991

•  European Union WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Directive 2003

•  ROHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Directive 2006

To view the directive you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Certification of disposal will be required for any Environmental Audit your organisation undertakes. Please note there will be a charge if you require us to provide a disposal certificate for lower specification computers.
