Your one stop shop for information and advice on the recycling and refurbishment of IT equipment.
The REI is a network of social enterprises across the North of England who refurbish redundant IT equipment and make it available for reuse in their local communities.
Established in 1999 the REI was set up to make IT disposal simple, safe and secure. They offer information and advice on your recycling options and put you in touch with your local social enterprise that can recycle, refurbish and safely dispose of your old IT equipment.
As well as helping you find a suitable recycler for your used IT equipment the REI website, http://www.electronicsinitiative.co.uk can also direct you to REI members who also sell refurbished IT equipment to the general public.
Re-using IT components and equipment is a great way to reduce the carbon footprint of your IT kit. And when you purchase refurbished equipment from a REI member you can be confident your supplier works to a code of conduct and operates quality assurance systems.
The website provides information on each of the members – what they do, how they deal with waste IT and what standards of service you can expect from them. It sets out why it’s important to dispose of IT equipment in a responsible way and what legislation individuals and companies now have to comply with.
It also explains the environmental, economic and social benefits of professional IT disposal with their profits going back into the business or into the community. Some members offer free computers for good causes, or retraining for long-term unemployed, work experience for local schools or training places for volunteers.
In June 2010, DOT-COMmunICaTions' 3R-iT Scheme become only the fourth fully accredited member of the Regional Electronics Initiative.
