Recycling Problems Solved

We Provide Environmental Solutions

Did you know: That the UK produces an estimated 1.2 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment every year, with over 95% of which traditionally ending up in landfill. This figure is growing by an average of 8% per YEAR. Every year millions of fully-functional computers throughout the world are thrown away.

However, from the 1st of July 2007 it became illegal in the UK to dump electrical and electronic equipment into landfill.

From our site in Calderdale, we recycle and refurbish redundant or unwanted I.T. equipment to ensure that minimal waste material enters the waste stream. Our recycling methods exceed current environmental legislation and we prioritise local, sustainable approaches to reuse and recycling.

Due to the rapid evolution of technology, many organisations and businesses have equipment they need to securely dispose off. DOT-COMmunications' 3R-iT Project accepts the donation of equipment from local authorities and agencies, businesses and individuals who would rather see their old equipment being reused rather than going to landfill.

I.T. Equipment which is fully functional, complete and meets our minimum specifications can be donated for FREE. We can even provide a FREE collection service within Calderdale if there are at least ten or more systems.

However, we can only refurbish computers for reuse if they are in a reasonable condition and fulfil our minimum specifications. If we are unable to REFURBISH your old computer, then we will RECYCLE it as Electronic Waste.

Wherever possible, working refurbished equipment is reused locally and we ensure that any materials which can not be reused are recycled, with hazardous components being safely broken down in full accordance with environmental legislation.

We can recycle I.T. equipment which is no longer useable, however to do this, we have to break your old computer down into its Plastic, Metal, and Glass component parts to be properly recycled. There are obviously costs involved in this process.

We continue to accept older or non-functional IT equipment in accordance with current environmental legislation, however we now charge for this service.

Please contact us on tel: 01422-845003 for a removal price.

Our recycling processes are in excess of current environmental legislation. After your equipment has gone through our testing process we decide whether that item can be recycled or has to be environmentally scrapped. We have adopted the best possible practices in the Environmental disposal of unusable I.T. equipment and use only local Environment Agency Approved agencies.

We aim to refurbish most of the donated I.T. equipment we receive, reusing approximately 80% of all donated equipment.

We Provide Social & Community Solutions

We welcome the donation of newer computers and IT equipment so please contact us if you have unwanted equipment. Wherever possible, working refurbished equipment is redistributed at cost to benefit local charities and local families on low income and students.

We accept unwanted I.T. equipment from:

Businesses, Community Organisations, Individuals, Local Authorities, Schools, Trusts etc. In fact anyone locally who would rather their old computer equipment did not end up in landfill.

Not only can this equipment benefit the local community, donations in kind may also be tax-deductable for participating businesses.

We sell our fully refurbished equipment to:

Not-for-Profit Organisations who receive a substantual sale discount.

We will sell to any individual who wants a refurbished computer.

We particularly aim to support local academic users such as students and school children and individuals including families on low income.

We supply refurbished computers at cost, provided they are not for resale; however, as we are a not-for-profit organisation, we have to charge a contribution to offset the significant cost of staff time involved in carrying out safety checks, PAT testing, system diagnostics, installation of most up-to-date drivers etc. Each computer undergoes over one hundred separate checks, tests and operations before it leaves our workshop. We can only refurbish computers for reuse if they are in a reasonable condition and fulfil our minimum specifications.

All items resold are fully tested, have a genuine Windows operating system installed (Linux is also available) and is ready for use. Discounts are available for local not-for-profit organisations and individuals on low income.

Given the problems of hazardous older technology ending up as e-waste in Africa or Asia, we do not donate or sell equipment, either working or non-working, outside the UK.

We Provide Employment Training Solutions

Our parent organisation, Ground Floor has a long and highly successful history in establishing not-for-profit schemes that combine support for disadvantaged local people with community-run environmental solutions.

One of the Aims of DOT-COMmunICaTions is to provide quality work experience and employment opportunities for local people with appropriate ICT skills who, as a result of either long-term unemployment, previously experiencing mental illness or long-term social problems, had found themselves disadvantaged.

The scheme has helped a lot of local disadvantaged people to return to either employment or contribute to the community. For information about our achievements last year please visit our statistics page to see what we achieved last year.

Our Trainees are referred to us from a number of local partnership agencies.
